Bringing light and joy to the streets of Paris
A busy crossing, a space people pass through every day but don’t take notice of or engage with. What if that space could stop people on their daily commute to take the space in? Instead of an open crossing the space will be covered with balloons to create a rainbow-like shape, people will walk underneath it and the lights will in sync with the crossing buttons and prompts. The audience will need to interact with the space where pressing the crossing button will trigger the balloons. The lights will glow with the wait to cross then flash when crossing is permitted. The installation will be a sensory experience engaging sight, touch and hearing, there will be sounds when the balloons light up to fully immerse the audience and transform the space completely. The goal of this installation is to make the audience look at a space they use every day in a different way, to bring an awareness to the space that was not there before, it elevates the boredom of waiting at a crossing and makes it an experience.Paris is the perfect space for this, there street art is commonplace there and so this would most likely be well-received. It also provides a great canvas for juxtaposition, the bright colours and shapes against the old architecture of the buildings bringing further awareness to the space.
This project requires technical skill to construct the balloons, the framework and for the use of sound to engage more senses. The frame and layout of the balloons take up a lot of space at the crossing, this could be a scalable framework to be implemented across multiple spaces. The units will be triggered by pressing the button for the crossing and will light up according to the sequence of the crossing button.
Bellow is our digital mockups of the balloons in the day and night as well as photos of the physical balloons that will be used.
